A Life Well Lived

My grandma's sister, Cucu Nyokabi, passed away last week on Friday. 29th Jan 2021. She passed away at the age of 107. I found out first thing in the morning, when I opened my WhatsApp to see dozens of messages from my cousins. Multiple WhatsApp images captioned, "RIP cucu". Even though she had a long, wonderful life, the messages still caught me by surprise. "Say it isn't so", I murmured to myself as I scrolled through the few images that couldn't even begin to summarize her life. She was my grandma's last living sibling and I felt like this was the end of a generation. I am named after my grandma, so in a way, Cucu Nyokabi was my sister. Those are the words my aunt used when she called me to update me about the plans for the burial, "Will you be able to come and bury your sister?"  In the past few days, I have been thinking a lot about my grandma. My Cucu Nyokabi looked exactly like my grandma. My cousins and I were really fond of her be...

New Beginnings: Kyle 2.0

I feel, and have always felt so-so about online dating. It could very easily go either way. I know we millennials, with our 5 minute noodles and instant coffee, are supposed to prefer the convenient world of online dating but surprisingly, I do not. It may have something to do with my old soul. I still think that The One is more often than not met at a party, in a coffee shop or a cute little bookstore. My problem with online dating is that the person, more often that not, will not look like their pictures. While they may be still be funny in person, their voice won't be that deep, husky baritone that you hear in your mind when you read their messages. They will definitely be shorter than you expect! Better the devil you know can see . Once in while, however, I am proved wrong. Of late I have been feeling the need to move on from Kyle. It's been a great 5 years but I am learning how to let go. We've been through a lot, Kyle and I. He's stuck around longer ...

Turning Twenty

Birthdays make me uncomfortable... Just one short day to the long awaited Tweenies ( that reckless time between the ages 20 and 33) ! I feel ecstatic, to say the least. Finally, teenage hood is over! Mine hasn't exactly been the easiest of teenage-hoods. I was an abnormal teen. I can almost see you rolling your eyes and thinking: "Another one of those 'I'm unique and misunderstood. No one but Eminem gets me.' tales..." Well, this one isn't. It's more of a 'I'm strangely weird. No one but P!nk gets me' tale. :-D I don't feel 20. To be frank, I haven't felt quite my age since I was like 10. My old soul doesn't quite fit in my young body. Really, I am such a Thirty-person. Those people for whom a coffee date and going out for drinks is similar save for the choice of beverage and the tempo of the music. Those people who can't stay up all night, no matter what. Like thirty-people, I have my tastes all figured out. If it...

Kenyan TV: mexican-soap watching afro-cinema loving people

2nd September 2012. Today will go down in history, or at least in my own personal history, because today is the day that my baby brother takes his first step towards 'drinking at the table of men'. He was flipping through the channels on TV when he said with a snort, "Puh! Nothing on but soap operas!" Time froze for a moment. I wanted to hug him with tears in my eyes but I feared this show of big-sister-mother-bear affection would reverse what was now the first sign that he would grow up normal. So instead I remained outwardly calm and commented that Sundays were usually like that...an all-you-can-bear buffet of soaps and wedding shows. I have to admit that my baby   small brother had begun to worry me a little. He was all of 12-going-on-to-13 and whereas I had taken, knowing all the words to most High School Musical ballads; watching Hanna Montana religiously every evening on KTN; and (by far the most worrisome trait) having an insatiable appetite for Mexican s...
